“As the owners of the Ocean Gate Resort here on beautiful Southport Island, we want to extend to you our personal thanks for choosing to stay with us.

After many years of working in management roles with Hilton Hotels, we embarked on a mission to find a Maine resort with traditional character that appeared to have potential, especially if we were willing to invest our own sweat equity and be full time, on-site managers.  We really liked what we found here at Ocean Gate, but I don’t mind confessing to you that we have an ambitious to-do list of major landscaping and renovation that will take several years to complete.  Our long term goal is to enhance Ocean Gate’s traditional character and lineage in ways that match the extraordinary scenery of our island setting.  We hope that you noticed some major progress in that direction.

The real purpose of this note, however, is to personally thank you for staying with us and teaching us something about the “love of place” that keeps folks coming back to Maine – and Ocean Gate.  We had absolutely no idea that so many people had such a long term relationship with Ocean Gate; for some of you, coming here had been a special childhood memory!  We have been very touched by so many of you, your families and your stories.

Thanks for being our guests.

We love to hear from our guests!  Here is a sampling of what they had to tell us....

Dear Frank and Ocean Gate Staff,

Marc and I wanted to express our gratitude to you and your staff who provided services during our wedding celebration.  The staff and venue made our wedding such a special time to share with our family and friends.  With your assistance we were able to have the most wonderful wedding!

Dear Bernie & Cheryl, [Ocean Gate Guest Service and Operations Managers]

Thank you for all of your help.  We so enjoyed meeting you and we couldn't have found a more perfect couple to share our "special event" with us.  People like you make the world a brighter place! Thanks again and we hope to see you again next year.

Chris and Sheryl S.

First and foremost, let me express my thanks for a very nice stay, simply excellent service, and just a great place overall that you have there at Ocean Gate Resort. I would like to extend that thanks to the manner in which you managed our very late arrival in the wee hours of what was supposed to be Wednesday, but with a very overdue flight and heavy fog all the way to Boothbay Harbor, was actually Thursday morning.

I stay in hotels all over the country in my work, and I have never had a late arrival handled so effectively (in fact, there is often some hassle!) - but you folks had that envelope taped to the office door and that simple act is very much appreciated by this road warrior – grab the key and hit the sack – simple, sure, but it made a very long day wind down with ease, and those simple touches should not go unmentioned as they are sadly rare, but I have been very impressed that Ocean Gate seems to be very in touch with the small things that make such a big difference.

Again, let me express my appreciation for your guest service, wonderful little hide away there, and the kindness of a favor after we had left. You have a new fan and be assured should I make my way up to your area again, I will be booking with you folks at Ocean Gate and will definitely be passing along my recommendation to friends and associates. Many Thanks!

Bruce L.

We arrived to Ocean Gate Resort and noticed immediately the attention to detail that all great resorts and destinations have. Flourescent lighting, low flow water fixtures, and an environemtnal awareness that escapes many hotels. This complex turns the lights down or off at night so star gazing is not impeded with unnecessary light pollution and really seems to get it that being in a natural place does not mean ripping every tree down to augment a view. An osprey nest a few hundred yards off the pier, a tranquil place for weary travelers who especially need to know that the places that they stay, want to conserve resources and leave the beauty of what was there before.
We will be back.

We went to Booth Bay on a photo/writing tour of Mass/Maine, --and went to heaven at Ocean Gate. Found it on the internet with good reviews. We were blown away! Did not want to leave--tried to extend but could not break the schedule. The people, food-(A+), acomodations, scenery, and amenities of the area have pushed this accidental find to the top of a fifty year list of travel stop destinations. You can really tell they care! It shows and we expect it is always that way. We wish all stops were this amazingly perfect! Superb destination Ocean Gate! Well done and thanks so much!

Ocean Gate Resort, near Boothbay Harbor, Maine, is almost a total opposite to the Maine coastal resorts we have visited in recent years. There is no four or five story building that resembles a hotel, no large asphalted area devoted to parking, no terrain from which all the pre-construction trees have been removed. Instead, Ocean Gate has six widely dispersed two story buildings surrounded by mature trees that extend down to the edge of the waterline, on the resort's private peninsula surrounded by ocean on three sides. All the amenities you expect in a coastal resort areavailable: canoes, kayaks, boat or dock fishing, tennis courts, hiking trails, fitness center, heated pool. But the overall ambiance separates Ocean Gate from its competitors. There is no concentration of resort activity. Environment friendly walkways, curving or rising and declining on what has to be the original small hills on the property, preserve that unique Maine sense of a merger of pine trees and ocean frontage. If you like uncrowded openness in a resort where the ocean is forever in view, Ocean Gate is the place for you. In recent years we have sampled various Ocean Gate units. Our favorite, when available, is an oceanfront cottage less than 100 feet from deep water where lobstermen daily haul their traps. Like all Ocean Gate units, it is a great value when compared to the typical rates in Boothbay Harbor, three miles distant, with four and five star restaurants, upscale shops and home port for one day boat trips around the most beautiful islands off the Maine coast. The entrance road to Ocean Gate runs through a pristine forest and passes a small pond almost hiiden from view by pine trees. At the end of that road is the Ocean Gate office, where there is a good chance you will be welcomed by the owner, something that has never happened to us at other resorts. But that warm welcome is what you would expect in a resort that we believe is unique and special.

I have stayed there 2 years in a row and have already booked another trip. The staff are friendly and helpful, the breakfasts keep you full for the day, and you can't find a room with a better view elsewheres. We stayed there this year with 4 generations, and there is something there for everyone. You can find the type of room you need and it pays to try more than one building to find the one that suits you best. I found the cedar building to be an artist's dream. My grandson liked watching the birds close to the waters edge in another. Plenty of different types of birds and in one of the overlook buildings we enjoyed watching a porcupine up a pine tree after his gourmet meal from another tree. Mini-golf, swim in the pool, kayake, or just enjoy one on the area's nature trails. We found one that follows the ocean and provided many scenic vistas. Whale watch, lighthouses, aquarium, botanical gardens, shop if you fancy it, and when you come back to your resort home you'll find there is still plenty to do.

The rooms are clean and comfortable and breakfast is not continental, it's better, a full meal with a well rounded choice of foods. I really love this place and would just as soon it be empty when I'm there. But it isn't fair to keep it a secret is it?...One tip....book well in advance...it really is not such a secret after all and you want to be sure to get your first room choice. You may also want to have a rainy day plan. We found a group in the local opera house called The Plaids that we all truly enjoyed listening to as they acted out a skit while singing songs all ages knew. The aquarium is fun for children of all ages and indoors as well.

Dear Frank & Staff,

Thank you so much for hosting our June 27th wedding.  You and your staff were always available to help us and the result was the day we'd always dreamed of.  Our guests loved the Resort and enjoyed their stay.  We are so glad we chose the Ocean Gate.

Hi Frank et al.,   Just wanted to say how much I enjoyed the Ocean Gate on my

recent visit.  Everyone had a great time catching up with one another and exploring

the area.  some went to the Coastal Botanic Garden, some went on a couple trails of

the Boothbay trust and a few to the Maritime Museum. all was so convenient and it

was nice just to be on the property looking at the water from our rooms or from the

"party room" where my cousins cooked up some great meals. All in all a terrific spot for

 a family reunion!

Dear Ocean Gate,

We have been coming to Ocean Gate off and on since the 70's and have always enjoyed our stay with you.  The breakfasts are delicious, the atmosphere soothing and calming to our spirits.  We stay in 5 star places and enjoy the service and amenities, but there is something about Ocean Gate that makes it 5 star in our minds.

This past week, we took the cottage hanging over the water and upon opening the door when we arrived, were swept away with memories of my Maine childhood and I was instantly relaxed. It is a treasure to go somewhere with just the basics....beauty at your door, cleanliness and a solid roof over your head.  The view is priceless and we just loved every minute there and think of it back in New Hampshire going about the busyness of life.  It was a needed respite and we thank you for keeping Ocean Gate unglitzed while upgrading everything from the painting, the office and the landscaping.  I love the artistry with which you are tackling the maintenance of Ocean Gate and we have only one complaint....we had to leave too soon.

Thank you and looking forward to a return.

Gail (New Hampshire)

Dear Frank:

We have just returned home and immediately wanted to thank you and your staff (You and Reggie were always around to inquire if anything was needed with that special smile and greeting).

The resort was everything that we hoped for.  In fact, we affectionately called it “our resort”!  Everything was perfect, including the very clean room, beautiful grounds and the swimming pool and hot tub were fabulous.  A return trip is in order due to the mini golf tournament ending in a tie, as well as the ping pong tournament results the same.

Every year we talk about what the adventure will be for our mother/daughter “get away”.  This year topped the list!  We were so excited to get settled, share a glass of wine and watch the fire in our fireplace.  Well, well, well…..and the rest is history and a wonderful memory and best of all, what a story to share with friends and family.

Best wishes for a great year!

Affectionately,

Mary and Kim

This is simple: The Ocean Gate Resort is the place to stay in Boothbay Harbor. We live in the Lakes Region of Maine and wanted to go someplace close, with lots of options for outdoor activities and private relaxation. The service was exceptional: the owners were ready to help us with our every need. They were friendly, professional, and respectful of our privacy. The room we stayed in (in the Oceanfront building) was beautiful, comfortable, and modern...great colors, tile, bedding, and of course, the view! It was perfectly clean - and I am picky about this. As their excellent website describes, the owners are in the process of updating many of the rooms. We were able to peek in most of the other rooms and saw that even those that have not been updated in the past two years look great. I would not hesitate to stay in ANY of the rooms here. The breakfast was perfect, with many hearty options. We were thrilled that they even had kayaks for us to use (complimentary), as well as mini-golf, a pool, a hot tub, and internet access. I know

we will be returning. It won't be soon enough.

Thanks for a great weekend!

We just returned from a weekend at the charming Ocean Gate Resort, where we have already booked another, slightly longer stay for a birthday celebration in June.

Upon our arrival, we were warmly greeted by Frank who remembered speaking with us on the phone, and Elaine in the office. After some conversation, we checked into our room and admired not only its tasteful decor and comfort, but the VIEW! From our second storey balcony, we had a spectacular view of islands, coves, eagles, a nesting ospreys, boats, and finally, a gorgeous sunset.

The natural beauty and quiet of Ocean Gate really impressed us. Spruce and pines line the pretty, long winding driveway, and rabbits darted in front of our car on the exit road. The sloped site permits wonderful views, and giant boulders abound. You'll not find a great deal of lawn, or many manicured flower beds, but who needs it when Mother Nature has created such a pretty place?

We spent time driving around the island's many roads, admiring more scenery, and in addition visited nearby sites such as the Maine Coast Botannical Garden, the Railroad Village, and Boothbay Harbor.

The weather was too chilly to enjoy canoeing, or any of the many activities available at Ocean Gate, but we plan to canoe and test the pool when we return next month.

Martha, an entertaining 24 year veteran of the place, prepares a huge buffet style hot and cold breakfast - enough for the biggest appetites. We're very particular about our coffee, and were pleasantly surprised to find it very good.

One won't find room service, pretensions, or uniformed employees standing around doing nothing as in some resorts. This is a place to relax and not worry about dressing up for a walk through the lobby. We hope you'll enjoy the scenery and Downeast hospitality as much as we did.

This was our first time at the Ocean Gate and I can say we will be going back. The rooms were clean, spacious and offered a fantastic view. The staff and owner were friendly and very accomodating.A full breakfast is served and it is better than We've had at many restaurants. Then as if that's not enough there's the amenities, Kayaks, canoes, mini golf, excercise equipment etc.
Boothbay harbor is a beautiful area to visit and staying at the Ocean Gate just made it that much more enjoyable.

"This is merely to say "thank you" once again for the hospitality, professional attention and personal touches you and your staff provided during our recent stay.

Our first trip to Maine and the coastal area was a truly memorable one filled with fun, laughter and wide-eyed wonder at the beauty of nature, the friendliness of the people the architecture and the food.

A wonderful vacation was experienced and we are most grateful for the roles both at the facilities at Ocean Gate and the personalities of the resort staff."

Thank you!!

“We can’t begin to thank you enough for making our 50th anniversary party the memorable event that it was.  There were, and still are, so many platitudes about the Resort. Many people wish to return. Getting the place ready this summer really entailed so many hours of work but it certainly is shaping up beautifully. The personal touches that you, Reg and the staff have done are sure to put the Ocean Gate on the map.  You can plan on us being one of your “regulars”!  It will be fun to watch the place evolve into the vision you have for it.  Thank you again for being a part of our “community of friends.”

Fondly,
Max & Ginger C.

“Thanks for making our stay so nice.  We appreciated your efforts at insuring our comfort and enjoyment.  The property presented numerous photographic opportunities for me.   The image on the card was shot at Ocean Gate and I’d love to come back to shoot some more!”

" I am writing to tell you how much we enjoyed our recent stay at your lovely Resort.  Our experience was markedly different from some of the unfavorable web reviews I advised you of (from prior owners).  I will try and post a review of my own.  Our room was scrupulously clean.....your front desk staff was friendly and accommodating.  The breakfasts were enjoyable, and staff there was courteous and efficient.  The grounds are lovely and the quiet of the natural surroundings was just what we’d hoped for. Thank you for letting us check out the paddle and life vest overnight to enjoy the splendor of a sunrise paddle.  Best wishes for much success.  We plan to return.”

Warm Smiles,

Dr. Nancy E.

I wanted to say that I really enjoyed working with you and your crew on the Valverde Wedding.......It is a very accommodating venue from my perspective, nice and compact.  Just mentioned Ocean Gate in glowing terms to a client who will be calling if she hasn’t already.  Hope to see you again soon.”

“In celebrating our anniversary this past weekend, we decided to find a place on the water.  The Ocean Gate Inn was perfect!  We had a lovely room overlooking the inlet.  It was quiet and peaceful.  The new owners are very accommodating and catered to our needs.  The complimentary breakfast was quite complete and the atmosphere in the dining room very relaxing and offered a view of the water.  We walked around the grounds and found many interesting photo opportunities while listening to the sounds of the birds and watching osprey, ducks and, of course, seagulls go about their business.  The Resort is close enough to Boothbay Harbor center yet far enough to offer a secluded and peaceful area where one can relax and enjoy the coast of Maine.”

"My husband and I just got home and I wanted to say what a nice time we had.  Everyone was very pleasant, our stay was relaxing, the food was good and our room was comfortable.  Ocean Gate is very quaint.  I hope your day turned out well after the (area) power outage.  You all seemed to handle that quite well and breakfast still went as if nothing had happened.  Great job!”

Thank you,
Doreen C.

“Hope you had a wonderful summer at the Ocean Gate.  Everyone is still talking about the great time they had at the Ocean Gate in June and I’d like to book Father’s Day weekend for next year for our group.  Hope you have a wonderful fall season in Boothbay!

We are a family of 6 (4 kids under 10), and this was our first time at the Ocean Gate. We booked through AAA based solely on the photo of the grounds and the list of activities. Only after making our reservations did we get around to reading the reviews on this and other sites (d’oh!), and based on some negative feedback, we considered canceling. We were willing to take a gamble based on the logic that even if the place was shoddily run, they couldn’t screw up such a great location, and we were determined to have fun regardless. I’m happy to report that the gamble paid off not only because the setting is so marvelous, but because the resort is so well run.

We came to learn that the Ocean Gate was recently bought and under new management. The manager/owner (Mr. Gaynor) told us he came from many years at Hilton, and it shows. This energetic guy was everywhere, all the time, and always polite and personable as he tended to one detail after another. All the staff were friendly and accommodating. In conversation, one staffmember acknowledged that the place had fallen into some disrepair through neglect over the years; what we saw were earnest efforts to bring it back.

The transition from old to new is apparent in the exercise room, for instance, which had a couple of rusty stationary bikes next to a brand new full-body-workout weight machine. The kids climbing structure could use an update, and the unusable hot tub (circa early ‘80s) was being dismantled while we were there. However, the breakfast buffet was ample and varied, and the dining room was clean and comfortable. The pool was refreshingly clean, the ping-pong table under the pavilion came in handy during a rainy day, and the mini-golf was no-frills fun for the kids. Our favorite thing by far was the opportunity for canoe/kayak action, a great way to explore the natural beauty of the bay. Also, the room we stayed in (Pine View) was well appointed and clean (their cleaning team seems comprised of what look like Russian supermodels—no joke—that complement the natural beauty of the setting!).

Overall, we had a terrific time, and we plan to return. It is a truly great place for a family vacation, and a good value to boot (a book 3/stay 1 night free incentive certainly helped). Their target is not Ritz-Carleton luxury-spa resort, and people expecting that type of experience should go elsewhere. What they do achieve at the Ocean Gate is a chance to experience mid-coast Maine in a comfortable and relaxed setting, with solid customer service and attention to detail.

My wife and I stayed here in June 2006 for our honeymoon. We liked it back then. But with new ownership it has gotten better, if that was possible. The location is great, the views are outstanding and the rooms are clean. The staff is friendly and they go out of their way to make you feel welcome. I called to order flowers, I asked if there was a local florist that could handle that request. They took care of everything, they even checked the room as we were checking in to make sure everything was in order.
Both my wife and I would recommend this location to anyone going to the Boothbay area. We are going to try to go there every year on our anniversary.
I understand, after talking with the general manager, that there are plans for improvement.

“My wife and I were delighted to receive your letter thanking us for staying at your resort.  We have stayed at many resorts over the years and this is the first time that we have ever received such a letter.  My wife and I enjoyed our week stay at your resort.  We were very pleased with all the improvements that we noticed this year.  We look forward to returning to Ocean Gate next year.

Sincerely,
Bruce M.
